11/29/10 COLD WEATHER/COLD BLOODED

Last week, we didn't need covers because it was so balmy, yet just a week later it is damn cold again! And sometimes the cold makes us do bad things, baaaaaad things. Because this Wisconsin weather has hardened us, builds character, you know, put hair on our chest.

Songs to help give your life meaning

Hope these help!
1. "Mannequin" Wire, Pink Flag, 1977
Certainly my favorite Wire record. This fall I've been listening to this back to back to back to back.

2. "Shivers" Boys Next Door
Nick Cave's first band, that later evolved into the Birthday Party, gettin' real serious in this slowburning song off 1979's Door, Door.

3. "Gotta Get Up" Harry Fucking Nilsson, Nilsson Schmilsson, 1971
As far as I'm concerned, the most soulful white male singer. There, I said it! Harry Nilsson was the man and used to get drunk with John Lennon and they would scream until their throats would bleed.

7/26/10 GIRLS! GIRLS! GIRLS! (Part One)

For our second show, we started having themes to make the variety less chaotic and more organized. The theme was GIRLS! GIRLS! GIRLS! All girls, all the time. For girls, by girls, to girls, about girls, everything GIRLS!
1.  "Girls" The Beastie Boys, Licensed to Ill, 1983
The perfect way to celebrate music about girls, with a song entirely dedicated to them! Although I prefer my girls to do more than do dishes and laundry, I prefer they all have new wave haircuts.
2.  "Real Live Lover" Pat Downey & The Vistas, Girls in the Garage Vol. 2
Girls in the Garage are compilations of garage girl bands in the sixties; truly great compilations indeed
3.  "Not Dangerous" Nons, Split 7" with Live Girls
Nons are a Canadian quartet of (mostly) girls that released this split 7" in 2006 I believe?
4.  "Puzzle Pieces" Tiger Trap, Tiger Trap, 1993
Tiger Trap were one of the many great bands that released on K Records, the home to many  acts such as Beat Happening, Beck, The Microphones, and the list goes on! This album was their first and only, but its influence is still apparent today. Rose Melberg, lead singer and guitarist, once joked that Calvin Johnson only signed them to K Records because he felt bad for using their name as a song title on Beat Happening's 1992 record You Turn Me On.
5.  "Lola" The Raincoats, The Raincoats, 1979
Half of the groups on this list wouldn't exist wihout the Raincoats. What would we have done had Ana de Silva and Gina Birch not met at Hornsey College of Art in 1977? I prefer not to think about that
6.  "Throw Aggi Off The Bridge" Black Tambourine, Complete Recordings, 1999
7.  "Mind Your Own Business" Delta 5, Singles & Sessions 1979–1981
8.  "Runaround Sue" Dion, 1961
9.  "Crimson and Clover" Joan Jett & The Blackhearts, I Love Rock 'N' Roll, 1981
10.  "Bell" Screaming Females, Power Move, 2009
11.  "Look of Love" Lesley Gore, 1964
12.  "California Girls" The Beach Boys, 1965
13.  "Night" Zola Jesus, Stridulum EP, 2010
14.  "I'd Be Ashamed" Wanda Jackson
15.  "Eleanor Rigby" Aretha Franklin
16.  "Suzy Is A Headbanger" The Ramones, Leave Home, 1977
17.  "Movie Romance" Love Is All, A Hundred Things Keep Me Up At Night, 2008
18.  "We Got The Beat" The Go-Go's, 1980
19.  "Schoolgirl" R. Stevie Moore, Hobbies Galore, 2003
20.  "Stupid Girl" The Rolling Stones, Aftermath, 1966
21.  "These Boots Were Made For Walkin'" Nancy Sinatra, 1966
